There’s a world of difference between simply visiting Machu Picchu and actually spending four days walking toward it. The Inca Trail asks something of you first—it’s a journey where you’ll climb through thin air, feel the healthy fatigue of a day well-spent, and wake up right beneath the majestic peaks of the Andes.
When you choose to hike, you’re walking on original stone paths and discovering hidden archaeological sites that travelers arriving by train will never get to see. Then, on that final, magical morning, Machu Picchu finally reveals itself through the Sun Gate. We understand this journey deeply because at View Signature Travels, we don’t just sell trekking; we live it and operate it ourselves.
WHAT IS THE CLASSIC INCA TRAIL?
The Classic Inca Trail is a multi-day adventure that winds through the heart of the Andes. What makes it so special is the perfect mix of stunning landscapes, a rewarding physical challenge, and ancient ruins, all leading up to that extraordinary moment you walk through Inti Punku. Usually, this life-changing journey is completed over four days.
HOW DIFFICULT IS THE INCA TRAIL?
I’ll be honest with you: it’s a challenge. You’ll be walking at high altitudes, tackling long ascents, and navigating steep stone stairways while the mountain weather keeps things interesting. While fitness certainly matters, finding your own pace is the real secret. A great guide will make sure the trek feels like an experience to savor, never a race to the finish.
CLASSIC VS SHORT INCA TRAIL
If you’re looking for a deep immersion into the mountains, the Classic Inca Trail is for you. Over four days and three nights of camping, you’ll tackle the highest mountain passes for a more physically demanding but incredibly rewarding experience. On the other hand, the Short Inca Trail offers two days of trekking with a comfortable hotel night near Machu Picchu, making it a moderate and ideal choice for those who want that Sun Gate entry without several nights in a tent.
WHAT DOES LUXURY MEAN ON THE INCA TRAIL?
To me, luxury on the trail isn’t about trying to turn the Andes into a five-star hotel—that would miss the whole point of being out here! Instead, it’s about providing the perfect conditions to recover so you can enjoy every step. Our elevated trekking service includes spacious private tents with proper beds, quality bedding, and even hot showers with private sanitary arrangements.
You’ll also have a dedicated trekking chef preparing carefully planned meals in comfortable dining areas. We can even arrange massages, stretching, or yoga sessions to keep you feeling great. While the mountain remains a challenge, the level of care around you completely changes how your body and mind experience the trek.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WALK THE INCA TRAIL AS A GAY COUPLE?
The trail is a wonderful, international environment where travelers from all over the world meet. For most gay couples, sexuality isn’t the focus; it’s really about having the privacy and comfort to enjoy each other’s company. On a private trek, you control the rhythm of the day, your guide is there specifically for you, and your camp is designed around your party, ensuring your personal space stays truly your own.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TREKKING TEAM?
The team is everything! While many travelers focus on the gear and hotels, I place just as much importance on the people: your guide, your chef, and the hardworking field team and porters who move through the mountains ahead of you. A beautiful campsite is only as good as the professional team making it all happen behind the scenes.
RESPONSIBLE TREKKING
The Inca Trail is a protected cultural treasure, not just a tourist product. We believe responsible trekking means careful waste management, respecting local regulations, and ensuring the field team is treated with the same respect as our travelers. When everyone is cared for, the energy of the whole journey feels right.
HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE?
To get the most out of your trek, start walking regularly and using the stairs at home to build up those leg muscles and your endurance. Most importantly, give yourself time to acclimatize once you arrive in Peru. Spending a few days in the Sacred Valley before you start the trek is a brilliant way to let your body adjust to the altitude.
WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK?
My best advice is to keep it practical. You’ll need comfortable hiking boots, plenty of layers, and solid protection from both the sun and the rain. Pack a good daypack with your personal meds and a reusable water system. Don’t worry—your pre-trip briefing will cover every technical detail so you’ll feel totally prepared before we head out.
